Four Key Certifications You Need to Know

Each regulation applies to different product categories. Get it right before your shipment leaves the port.

Mark of Safety
CE

CE Marking

What Products Need It

Any product sold in the European Economic Area (EEA) that falls under one of 20+ EU New Approach Directives: toys, machinery, medical devices, electrical equipment, PPE, construction products, and more.

Key Points

  • Not a quality mark — declares conformity with EU safety, health, and environmental requirements
  • Manufacturer is legally responsible for compliance, even if subcontracted
  • Required on product, packaging, and technical documentation
  • Some categories require third-party Notified Body assessment
Common Myth

"CE on the product means it's certified." — Fake CE marks are widespread. A valid CE mark must be traceable to a real Technical File and Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

Hazardous Substances
🔌

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances)

Scope

Applies to electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) sold in the EU — from smartphones to washing machines, toys with batteries, LED bulbs, and cables.

Key Points

  • Restricts 10 hazardous substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium VI, PBBs, PBDEs, DEHP, BBP, DBP, DIBP
  • Each homogeneous material in the product must comply individually
  • RoHS 2.0 (2011/65/EU) is currently the enforced directive
  • Declaration of Conformity must be issued by the manufacturer
Common Myth

"RoHS only applies to the product itself." — Components inside (batteries, wires, circuit boards, plastic parts) must also comply individually.

Chemicals Regulation
🧪

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals)

Scope

Covers all chemical substances manufactured or imported into the EU at 1 tonne or more per year. Also requires SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) disclosure in articles.

Key Points

  • If your product contains 0.1% w/w of any SVHC from the candidate list, you must notify ECHA
  • Currently over 240 SVHCs on the candidate list — updated twice yearly
  • Suppliers must provide a SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for chemical substances
  • Importers are responsible for registration if EU-based
Common Myth

"REACH only applies to chemical products." — REACH applies to articles too, including furniture, textiles, and electronics that contain SVHCs.

Post-Brexit UK
🇬🇧

UKCA Marking

Scope

Replaced CE marking for products sold in Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) after Brexit. Northern Ireland follows EU rules and keeps CE marking.

Key Points

  • Applies to the same product categories that required CE marking in the EU
  • UK-based Authorized Representative may be needed if manufacturer is outside UK
  • UK conformity assessment bodies (not EU Notified Bodies) must be used for third-party assessment
  • Technical documentation must be kept for 10 years
Common Myth

"CE marking is still valid in the UK." — Since 1 January 2025, CE marking alone is NO longer recognized in Great Britain. You need the UKCA mark for full market access.

Compliance Workflow

Our 4-Step Compliance Process

We walk through every box your product needs to tick before it's ready for the European market.

FAQ

Common Compliance Pitfalls & Answers

Don't let these costly mistakes slow down your shipment.

CE marking is required for products covered by EU New Approach Directives, including: electrical and electronic equipment, toys, machinery, medical devices, PPE (personal protective equipment), construction products, pressure vessels, elevators, and more. There is no single "EU-wide list" — it depends on the specific product category and directive. We help you map this correctly.
Not necessarily. Fake or invalid CE markings are extremely common in China. You must verify: (1) the certificate belongs to your exact product model, (2) it was issued by a legitimate EU Notified Body (check the NANDO database), (3) the Declaration of Conformity (DoC) exists with your manufacturer's name, and (4) a complete technical file is available. We handle this verification for you.
Non-compliant products face customs detention at EU borders, which can hold shipments for weeks and incur storage fees. Market surveillance authorities can order product recalls, issue fines up to €100,000+ depending on the regulation, and ban your product from the EU market. Online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy regularly remove listings with non-compliant products, harming your seller account health permanently.
Typically 2–4 weeks, depending on product complexity and which certifications are needed. Simple products (e.g., plastic kitchen utensils) may only need a DoC and RoHS declaration — about 1–2 weeks. Products requiring third-party lab testing (e.g., electronics for CE+RoHS, children's toys) usually take 3–4 weeks. We can also expedite critical shipments with rush lab testing for an additional fee.
Yes, for Great Britain. Since 1 January 2025, CE marking alone is no longer recognized in England, Scotland, or Wales. You need the UKCA mark for products sold there. However, products sold in Northern Ireland still use CE marking. If you sell to both the EU and UK, you may need both marks on your product or use separate batch labeling.
